STRs are permitted in unincorporated Los Angeles County as an accessory use to existing dwelling units in zones that permit residential uses. Registrations are limited to the host’s primary residence; ADUs, rent-restricted primary residences, and vacation rentals are ineligible. County rules impose operational limits including a 90-day calendar-year cap for stays when the host is not present overnight, guest/occupancy limits, and prohibitions on certain events and activities.
How to Obtain a Permit
1) Register online through the County STR registration portal (lacountystr.munirevs.com) and obtain a Short-Term Rental Registration Certificate before offering rentals. 2) Pay the annual registration fee (ordinance states $914 annually) and comply with host requirements and hosting-platform obligations as specified in the ordinance. 3) Renew annually and remit required Transient Occupancy Tax via the County portal.
