Zoning & Conditions
Vacation rentals are only permitted when specifically authorized by the County (Conditional Use process or MPUD zoning amendment; certain units may be grandfathered). For platted subdivisions/condominiums, authorization must apply to the entire subdivision/condominium or a distinct section and requires a petition signed by at least 51% of owners and certified-mail notice to owners within 250 feet. Operational rules include compliance with Chapter 509 (state lodging laws), display of Chapter 509 license and local business tax certificate on the unit door, a 24-hour management contact (published local or toll-free number), maximum occupancy of two persons per enclosed bedroom, and a minimum rental period of six days.
How to Obtain a Permit
1) Apply for County authorization via the Conditional Use process or MPUD zoning amendment through Taylor County Planning (submit required petition signed by ≥51% of owners where applicable and provide certified-mail notice at least 20 days before hearing). 2) If approved, register each approved unit annually with the County Administrator or designee on or before Sept. 30, pay the stated registration fee, obtain a local business tax certificate from the Tax Collector, and hold the required Chapter 509 state license (if applicable). 3) Operate in compliance with required postings (display licenses on back of main entrance/exit), maintain an occupancy log and provide a 24-hour management contact; amend registration information within 15 days of any changes.
