Zoning & Conditions
Short-term rentals are permitted under Village of Schaumburg regulations but subject to specific constraints: minimum rental duration of 20 hours, prohibition on providing food/beverage except pre-packaged items, a 1,000-foot minimum separation between short-term rental properties, prohibition on operation/ownership by corporate entities (except trusts/estates with a natural-person beneficiary/trustee), limitation of no more than one short-term rental at a specific location during the one-year period commencing on the date a license is issued, and applicability of the village hotel/motel tax. Properties lawfully operating before the ordinance may be legal nonconforming uses but lose that status upon transfer of ownership or failure to renew a license.
How to Obtain a Permit
1) Complete the Village-required Crime Free Housing Seminar and retain proof of completion (screenshot). 2) Submit the Short-Term Rental application via the Village OpenGov portal (Short-Term Rental Application) and pay the full-year $300 fee. 3) Undergo any required inspection (annual inspections are required for short-term rentals); once application, seminar proof, and payment are verified, the short-term rental license will be issued electronically (allow ~2 weeks processing). Rental licenses expire December 31 and are renewed annually; renewal notices are sent in November.
