Zoning & Conditions
Cayuga County does not impose county-wide STR land-use or operational permit standards; however, all operators must register for and collect room occupancy tax and certify compliance with New York State health/safety standards and liability insurance requirements. Individual municipalities (e.g., Village of Fair Haven) may have additional local permit requirements, inspections, and occupancy limits.
How to Obtain a Permit
1) Complete the 'Certificate of Registration & Application for Certificate of Authority to Collect Hotel/Motel/Short-Term Rental Room Occupancy Tax' form. 2) Submit the completed form to the Cayuga County Treasurer's Office within three days of opening the business. 3) The Treasurer issues a Certificate of Authority which must be prominently displayed at the rental property.
